Guru Mangal Yog 2026: Mangal and Guru in Kark and Simha

Guru Mangal Yog 2026: Mangal and Guru in Kark and Simha

Mars entered Karkat (Cancer) at 4:36 pm IST on 18 September 2026 and found Jupiter already there. The two have shared the sign since, which gives astrologers an old question to argue over: what happens when the planet of action sits in its sign of debilitation next to the planet of judgement in its sign of exaltation?

The pairing does not end when Jupiter changes sign on 31 October. Both planets turn retrograde over the winter, and because of that they keep meeting. They share Karkat until 31 October, share Simha (Leo) from 12 November to 25 January, come back together in Karkat from 10 March to 26 April 2027, and share Simha one last time from 26 June to 5 July 2027. In the middle of it, from 12 November to 5 December, Ketu joins them in Simha.

One detail in that table deserves a second look. In Karkat, Mars never catches Jupiter. The closest they come is just under six degrees, on 31 October, when Jupiter slips into Simha. Their exact conjunction happens in Simha on 16 November, with Ketu just over half a degree away. Any site that gives you an exact Mars and Jupiter conjunction in Cancer for this autumn is quoting the sign, not the degree.

A fallen Mars beside an exalted Jupiter

Mars is debilitated in Karkat, with its deepest point at 28°. The classical reason is simple enough: Karkat is a watery, emotional, protective sign ruled by the Moon, and Mars is heat, speed and the urge to fight. In Karkat that energy turns inward. People with a debilitated Mars often describe anger they swallow and then release at the wrong moment, at home, at the people closest to them.

Jupiter is exalted in the same sign, with its highest point at 5°. So for six weeks this autumn the weakest Mars of the zodiac has been sitting with the strongest Jupiter. Mars and Jupiter are natural friends, and Jupiter's company is the textbook example of a debilitated planet being helped.

Astrologers today call the meeting of Mars and Jupiter Guru Mangal yoga. The reference page on Guru Mangala yoga covers it in a birth chart. The idea is that Jupiter gives Mars a reason and Mars gives Jupiter the will to act on it: courage with a conscience, force used for a cause. In a sign as tender as Karkat the cause is usually close to home: a family property, a parent's care, a child's admission, a dispute over land. Mars is the karaka of land and Karkat is the house, so property and housing questions come up often while the two share it.

What neecha bhanga means, and what it does not

Neecha bhanga, the cancellation of debilitation, is a rule for the birth chart. Phaladeepika and later works give several conditions for it. Three of them apply directly to Mars in Karkat:

  1. The lord of the sign Mars occupies, which is the Moon, stands in a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) from the lagna.
  2. The planet exalted in that sign, which is Jupiter, stands in a kendra from the lagna or from the Moon.
  3. The lord of Mars's own exaltation sign, Makar, which is Saturn, stands in a kendra from the lagna or from the Moon.

For a child born between 18 September and 31 October 2026, Mars is in Karkat and Jupiter is always in the same sign. The second condition is therefore met whenever Karkat is itself a kendra from the lagna or the Moon, that is, when the lagna or the Moon is in Mesh, Karkat, Tula or Makar. The third is met when the lagna or the Moon is in Mithun, Kanya, Dhanu or Meen, because Saturn is in Meen all through this period. Put together, most charts cast in these six weeks carry at least one cancelling condition, which is worth knowing before anyone calls a newborn's Mars weak.

Neecha bhanga does not make Mars exalted. What it usually describes is a planet that struggles early and recovers with effort, sometimes to an unusual height, which is why the stronger form is called neecha bhanga raja yoga. Our reference page on neecha bhanga yoga explains how it is judged, and the lesson on exaltation, debilitation and planetary strength covers the degrees.

For a transit the rule is looser. There is no lagna of the moment to count from, so what people notice is simpler: while Jupiter stays in Karkat, Mars's worst habits are held in check, and once Jupiter leaves they are not. The week between 31 October and 12 November is Mars in Karkat on its own, and it reaches its deepest point, 28°, on the afternoon of 8 November, the day of Diwali. Mars is fire and Karkat is the home. Be careful with lamps and firecrackers indoors that week, and with arguments that start over small things.

The three in Simha, 12 November to 5 December

Mars crosses into Simha on the evening of 12 November and runs straight into Jupiter and Ketu, both sitting at a little over one degree of the sign, in Magha nakshatra. On the morning of 15 November all three are within half a degree of one another. Mars passes Ketu at 6:01 am that day and Jupiter at 11:53 am the next.

Mars and Ketu together are sudden and hot: accidents from haste, surgery, fire, a quick temper, decisions to cut something off completely. Jupiter's presence turns that into righteousness. People fight for what they think is right, and they are usually sure of themselves. In Simha, the sign of authority and government, the fights tend to be with bosses, officials and fathers. The birth chart version of this combination is on the page for Mars, Jupiter and Ketu together, and the Jupiter and Ketu side is covered in Jupiter in Leo 2026.

Mars in Simha is in a friend's sign, the Sun's, so it is far stronger here than it was in Karkat. From 12 November it casts its special 8th aspect onto Meen, where Saturn is. A Mars aspect on Saturn is a classic signature of friction: labour disputes, machinery failing, strained joints, work that stalls and then has to be forced. That aspect lasts as long as Mars stays in Simha, which because of its retrograde is until 10 March 2027.

After Ketu leaves on 5 December, Mars and Jupiter stay together in Simha until 25 January 2027. This is the cleaner form of Guru Mangal yoga: Mars in a friend's sign, Jupiter in a friend's sign, both in the royal sign of the Sun.

The second round in Karkat, March and April 2027

Mars turns retrograde on 10 January 2027 at 16°11' Simha and moves backwards into Karkat on 10 March. Jupiter, also retrograde, has been back in Karkat since 25 January, and Ketu has been there since December. So from 10 March to 26 April 2027 the same three planets meet again, this time in Karkat, with Mars debilitated and retrograde and Jupiter exalted and retrograde. They come within 3°39' of each other on 28 March but do not meet exactly.

A retrograde planet gains cheshta bala, the strength of motion in the Shadbala system, and some astrologers read a debilitated planet in retrograde as behaving more like an exalted one. Whether or not you follow that view, the spring of 2027 repeats the themes of this autumn: home, property, the mother, protective anger. Anything that flared in October 2026 is likely to come back for settlement then.

Mars and Jupiter for each moon sign

Read this from your moon sign. The main window is Mars and Jupiter together in Simha, 12 November 2026 to 25 January 2027. The classical gochar rules favour Mars in the 3rd, 6th and 11th houses from the Moon, and Jupiter in the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th.

Moon sign Karkat, until 31 October Simha, 12 November to 25 January
Mesh 4th 5th
Vrishabh 3rd 4th
Mithun 2nd 3rd
Karkat 1st 2nd
Simha 12th 1st
Kanya 11th 12th
Tula 10th 11th
Vrishchik 9th 10th
Dhanu 8th 9th
Makar 7th 8th
Kumbh 6th 7th
Meen 5th 6th

Mesh

Your own sign lord moves into your 5th house with Jupiter. Children, study and creative work get energy and guidance at the same time, and competitive exams go well. Mars in the 5th can also make you rash with money and romance. Before that, the Karkat weeks put both in your 4th house of home, where Mars is at its weakest: family tempers run short until 12 November. More on Mesh.

Vrishabh

The pair moves through your 4th house of home, mother, land and vehicles. Buying, selling or renovating property is likely, and disagreements at home come with it. Mars from the 4th aspects your 7th, 10th and 11th, so partners and work feel the pressure too. Drive carefully in the Ketu weeks, 12 November to 5 December. More on Vrishabh.

Mithun

Mars in your 3rd house is one of its best transits: courage, initiative, and effort that pays. Jupiter in the 3rd is less comfortable, but the combination suits anything that needs you to go out and ask: sales, interviews, publishing, short journeys. Siblings may need help. More on Mithun.

Karkat

Since September both planets have been on your Moon, and with Mars debilitated there, you may have felt irritable and then guilty about it. By 12 November both have moved on to your 2nd house of family, savings and speech. Jupiter helps money, Mars sharpens your tongue. Watch what you say at family gatherings in November. Ketu then enters your own sign on 5 December. More on Karkat.

Simha

All three planets sit on your Moon from 12 November to 5 December. It is a charged few weeks: plenty of energy and conviction, not much patience. Guard your health, particularly blood pressure, heat and injuries from rushing. Mars from your 1st aspects your 4th, 7th and 8th houses, so home and marriage feel it, and Jupiter's aspect on the 7th helps you repair what Mars disturbs. Saturn is 8th from you, which makes this a period to slow down. More on Simha.

Kanya

Mars and Jupiter move through your 12th house of expense, foreign travel, hospitals and sleep. Spending rises, often on travel or on someone else's care. Mars in the 12th can disturb sleep. It is a good period for work done abroad or behind the scenes. More on Kanya.

Tula

This is the best placement of the whole transit. Both planets move into your 11th house of gains, which is favourable for Mars and for Jupiter alike. Income, promotions, help from elder siblings and friends, and wishes that have waited a long time. Before that, in October, both sat in your 10th house and pushed hard at work. More on Tula.

Vrishchik

Your sign lord moves with Jupiter through your 10th house of career. Ambition is high and you get a hearing from people in authority, but the Simha weeks with Ketu can bring a sharp exchange with a superior. Choose the fight carefully. Mars's 4th aspect falls on your own moon sign, which adds drive and some restlessness. More on Vrishchik.

Dhanu

Your sign lord Jupiter and Mars move into your 9th house of fortune, father, guru and long journeys. Pilgrimage and higher study are well supported. Mars in the 9th can bring disagreement with a father or a teacher, but Jupiter keeps it respectful. More on Dhanu.

Makar

The pair moves through your 8th house, the house of sudden events, surgery, joint money and inheritance. Mars in the 8th asks for care with driving, machines and health, especially during the Ketu weeks. Jupiter here protects more than it gives. From 5 December Rahu enters your own sign as well. More on Makar.

Kumbh

Mars and Jupiter move into your 7th house, and both aspect your moon sign from there. Partnerships and marriage matters move quickly, sometimes too quickly. Jupiter supports agreements; Mars brings arguments about who leads. Both aspects on your Moon also reach Rahu there until 5 December. More on Kumbh.

Meen

Mars in your 6th house is one of its best transits: rivals give way, debts can be cleared, and health improves if you put the effort in. Jupiter, your sign lord, is less comfortable in the 6th. With Saturn on your Moon and Mars's 8th aspect landing on Saturn from 12 November, work will feel heavy at times, but the 6th house Mars gives you the stamina to carry it. More on Meen.

Reading it for your own chart

Look at which houses Mars and Jupiter rule for your lagna as well as which ones they transit. For a Mesh or Vrishchik lagna, Mars is the lagna lord and this transit is personal. For a Karkat or Simha lagna, Mars is a yogakaraka, the lord of both a kendra and a trikona, and its movement matters more than it does for most people. If you are running a Mars or a Jupiter dasha, the dates above are the ones to mark.

Common questions

When are Mars and Jupiter in conjunction in 2026?

They share Karkat from 18 September to 31 October 2026 and Simha from 12 November 2026 to 25 January 2027. The exact conjunction by degree is on 16 November 2026 at 11:53 am IST, at 1°45' Simha.

Is Mars debilitated in Cancer in 2026?

Yes. Mars is in Karkat, its sign of debilitation, from 18 September to 12 November 2026, and again from 10 March to 26 April 2027. Its deepest point, 28°, is reached on 8 November 2026.

Does Jupiter cancel Mars's debilitation?

In a birth chart, Jupiter being exalted in Karkat is one of the classical conditions for neecha bhanga, but it counts only when Jupiter is in a kendra from the lagna or the Moon. In a transit, Jupiter's company softens Mars while they share the sign.

What is Guru Mangal yoga?

It is the name used today for Mars and Jupiter together in one sign, or in mutual aspect. It is read as courage guided by judgement. How well it works depends on the sign, the houses involved and the rest of the chart.

Which moon signs benefit most?

Tula, because both planets transit its 11th house of gains. Mithun and Meen get Mars in a favourable house, and Mesh, Karkat, Dhanu and Kumbh get Jupiter in one.

How long does Mars stay in Leo?

Longer than usual. Mars enters Simha on 12 November 2026, turns retrograde there on 10 January 2027, goes back into Karkat on 10 March, and returns to Simha on 26 April before leaving for Kanya on 5 July 2027.
