What Rahu signifies
Rahu is one of the nine grahas of Jyotish. It is a malefic graha whose presiding deity is Durga / the north lunar node, and it signifies obsession, worldly ambition and the pull of illusion. In the body it governs nervous disorders, mysterious ailments.
A graha is not a planet in the astronomical sense. The word means “that which seizes”, and each one is read as a living significator rather than a rock in space. Rahu is the karaka of obsession & ambition, foreign lands & the unconventional, illusion (maya), which means those matters are judged from its condition anywhere in the chart, quite apart from the houses it happens to rule.
Rahu aspects the 7th house from itself, and additionally the 5th and 9th, which is why its reach across a chart is unusually wide. Its day is Saturday, its direction South-West, its element air, and its metal lead.
Rahu as karaka

Rahu is exalted in Taurus, debilitated in Scorpio, and has its moolatrikona in Aquarius. As a chhaya graha (shadow graha) it owns no sign of its own, and takes on the character of its dispositor and any graha it joins. A strong versus a weak Rahu
When Rahu is strong, meaning dignified by sign, well placed by house and free of affliction, it gives worldly success, foreign gains, innovation, sudden rise and mastery of the unconventional.
When it is weak, combust, debilitated or heavily afflicted, the same graha gives confusion, anxiety, deceit, addictions and unexpected upheaval.
Strength is measured, not guessed. The classical measures are dignity by sign, placement by house, Shadbala (six-fold strength), freedom from combustion, and the aspects received. A single factor rarely settles it, which is why two charts with Rahu in the same sign can read in opposite directions.
