So far a planet has affected the house it sits in. But planets also look at other houses from a distance, casting an influence called drishti (aspect). Understanding drishti is what turns a flat chart into a living web of connections.
The basic rule: the 7th aspect
Every planet fully aspects the house directly opposite it, the 7th house counted from where it sits. So a planet in the 1st house aspects the 7th, a planet in the 4th aspects the 10th, and so on. This is the one aspect every graha has.
Special aspects of Mangal (Mars), Guru (Jupiter) and Shani (Saturn)
Three planets have extra aspects, and these are essential to know:

Why aspects matter
A difficult house can be rescued by a benefic aspect, and a good house can be stressed by a malefic aspect. That is why two people with the same planet in the same house can still get different results: the aspects each planet receives are different.

Why Mangal, Guru and Shani get extra drishti
The special aspects are not arbitrary. They follow the nature of the three grahas.
Mangal aspects the 4th and 8th, the houses of home and of upheaval. It is the graha of force, and it reaches into the places where force disrupts security.
Guru aspects the 5th and 9th, the two trikonas of intelligence and fortune. It is the graha of expansion and blessing, so it reaches the houses of grace.
Shani aspects the 3rd and 10th, the houses of effort and of career. It is the graha of sustained labour, so it reaches where labour is done.
Read that way, the special aspects become memorable rather than a list to cram.
Drishti is not mutual
A point beginners consistently get wrong: aspects are one directional, except for the 7th.
Guru in the 1st aspects the 5th. But a graha in the 5th does not aspect the 1st in return, because the 5th's own drishti reaches the 11th. Only the 7th aspect is reciprocal, since the 7th from the 7th is the 1st.
So when you check what influences a house, you must scan the whole chart and ask which grahas reach it, rather than only looking at what the house itself can see.
Strength of an aspect
Not every drishti lands with equal force. Two adjustments matter.
A full aspect versus a partial one. The special aspects of Mangal, Guru and Shani, and every graha's 7th, are treated as full. Classical texts also describe partial aspects of one quarter, one half and three quarters for other distances, though many modern practitioners work only with the full ones.
The condition of the aspecting graha. A strong, dignified Guru aspecting your 7th is genuinely protective. A weak, combust, debilitated Guru aspecting the same house promises more than it delivers.

- Which grahas occupy it.
- Which grahas aspect it, using the table above.
- Where its lord sits, and what aspects that lord.
- Whether the natural karaka for the theme is strong.
A house with a malefic sitting in it but a strong Guru aspecting it is in far better shape than a house with nothing in it and a debilitated lord. This is exactly the kind of cross-check that separates a real reading from a lookup.
Frequently asked questions
Do the rashis aspect each other too? Yes, in the Jaimini system signs have their own aspects. That is a separate framework from the graha drishti described here.
Does Rahu aspect anything? Practice varies. Many astrologers give Rahu and Ketu the 5th, 7th and 9th like Guru; others use only the 7th. Both approaches are defensible.
Is an aspect weaker than occupation? Generally yes. A graha sitting in a house affects it more directly than one aspecting from a distance, though a strong aspect from a well placed graha can outweigh a weak occupant.
