What the 4th house (Bandhu / Sukha) means
A bhava (house) is a division of the chart, not a sign. The twelve bhavas are fixed compartments of life, and the signs rotate into them according to your lagna. The 4th house, called Bandhu / Sukha and known as the house of home & happiness, governs mother, home, comforts and inner happiness.
Its natural sign is Cancer and its natural lord is Moon. In the body it maps to the chest, heart, lungs. Sitting directly opposite is the 10th house (house of career), and the two always work as a pair: whatever is emphasised here is balanced there.
One point decides most readings and is worth stating early. In your own chart the 4th house is not ruled by Moon. In practice, any question about mother, home & property, vehicles is answered by reading this house, its lord, the grahas sitting in it and the drishti falling on it. All four matter, and a reading that uses only one of them is incomplete.
Classification: what kind of house this is
The 4th house is a Kendra (angular) house. Bhava classes are not decoration. They decide which grahas do well here before any other factor is considered.
Kendra (angular). The 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th are the load-bearing pillars of a chart. Grahas here get the power to act, and benefics placed in kendras are especially valued.
The 4th house lord matters more than its occupants
Beginners read the grahas sitting in a house. Experienced readers look first at the bhavesha, the lord of the house, because a house delivers through its lord. An empty 4th house with a strong, well-placed lord performs far better than a crowded one whose lord is debilitated or hidden in a dusthana.
Three questions settle it. Where is the lord placed, by house and by sign? What is its dignity, meaning is it exalted, in its own sign, in a friend’s sign or debilitated? And what aspects it? A 4th house lord placed in a kendra or trikona with benefic drishti is the single clearest sign that this area of life will work out.
The natural lord, Moon, still matters as the karaka, the natural significator of these matters. Its condition in your chart colours the house even when it rules somewhere else entirely.
What each graha does in the 4th house
The same bhava treats the nine grahas very differently. This is the honest, classical reading for each one placed here, not a blanket benefic or malefic label:

Drishti: which positions aspect the 4th house
A bhava is shaped as much by what looks at it as by what sits in it. Every graha casts drishti on the 7th house from itself, and Mangal, Guru, Shani, Rahu and Ketu have special aspects on top of that.
- Sun aspects the 4th house from the 10th house.
- Moon aspects the 4th house from the 10th house.
- Mars aspects the 4th house from the 1st, 9th and 10th house.
- Mercury aspects the 4th house from the 10th house.
- Jupiter aspects the 4th house from the 8th, 10th and 12th house.
- Venus aspects the 4th house from the 10th house.
- Saturn aspects the 4th house from the 2nd, 7th and 10th house.
- Rahu aspects the 4th house from the 8th, 10th and 12th house.
- Ketu aspects the 4th house from the 8th, 10th and 12th house.

A strong versus a weak 4th house
When the 4th house and its lord are strong and well placed, the classical result is a happy home, property, vehicles and emotional contentment.
When the lord is weak, combust, debilitated or hidden in a dusthana, and the house receives malefic drishti without benefic relief, the same bhava gives domestic unrest, property disputes and an unsettled inner life.
Most charts sit between the two. That is normal, and it is why a competent reading measures degree rather than declaring a verdict. A house is judged on the balance of its lord’s dignity and placement, the grahas in it, the drishti on it, and the strength of its natural karaka.
How to judge the 4th house in your own kundali
Work through it in this order. It is the sequence a Jyotishi actually uses:
- Find which sign falls on your 4th house. That depends on your lagna, so it is different for everyone.
- Identify that sign’s lord. That graha is your 4th house lord, whatever the natural lord Moon is doing.
- Find where that lord sits, and judge its dignity by sign.
- Note any grahas placed in the 4th house itself, using the table above.
- Add the drishti falling on the house.
- Check the natural karaka, Moon, separately.
- Only then look at timing, through the Vimshottari dasha of the house lord and the grahas involved.
Results for this bhava usually surface during the dasha or antardasha of its lord, or of a graha placed in it, which is why two people with an identical 4th house experience it at completely different ages.
