A rashi is one of the twelve 30° slices of the zodiac. The whole circle is 360°, so twelve signs of 30° each fill it exactly. Why your Vedic rashi differs from your Western sign

The twelve rashis are measured against the fixed stars. The Western tropical zodiac is measured from the spring equinox, which drifts slowly backwards through the constellations. Over roughly two thousand years the two systems have separated by about 24 degrees, a gap called the ayanamsha.

Twenty four degrees is most of a sign, so if your Western Surya sits in the early part of a sign, your Vedic Surya almost always falls in the previous one. Someone who has called themselves a Simha for thirty years is frequently a Karka in Jyotish. This is expected, not an error.
