What Vrishabha (Taurus) means
Vrishabha (Taurus) is the 2nd rashi of the sidereal zodiac, spanning 30 to 60 degrees of the ecliptic. It is symbolised by the bull, ruled by Venus, and it governs the face and neck in the body. At its core, Vrishabha is about grounded stability and sensual patience.
It is a Earth sign of Fixed (Sthira) quality. Those two facts do most of the work in a reading: the element sets the temperament, and the modality sets how that temperament behaves over time. Vrishabha is the natural 2nd house of the Kaal Purush kundali, so it carries an affinity with wealth, family, speech and the resources you gather.
An important distinction: Jyotish uses the sidereal zodiac, which tracks the constellations where they actually are. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac. The two have drifted about 24 degrees apart, so your Vedic rashi is usually the sign before your Western one. If you were told you are Scorpio or the sign after Taurus, check your actual chart rather than assuming.
Venus, the lord of Vrishabha
Every rashi is read through its lord. Venus rules Vrishabha, so wherever Venus sits in a chart, it carries Vrishabha matters with it. If your lagna or Chandra is in Vrishabha, the condition of Venus is the single most informative fact in your kundali. Venus signifies love, beauty and the pleasures of life, and it is exalted in Pisces and debilitated in Virgo.
Venus also rules Libra, so the two signs share a ruler and are linked in any chart where Venus is strong or afflicted.
This is also why a rashi is never judged alone. A Vrishabha lagna with a strong, well-placed Venus behaves very differently from a Vrishabha lagna whose lord is debilitated. See exaltation, debilitation and planetary strength for how to judge it.
Which grahas are strong or weak in Vrishabha
A sign confers dignity. These are the fixed classical positions that Vrishabha gives, and they apply in every chart:
| Dignity in Vrishabha | Graha | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Owns the sign (swakshetra) | Venus | At home and comfortable, giving steady, reliable results. |
| Exalted (uchcha) | MoonRahu | At maximum strength, delivering its best significations. |
| Debilitated (neecha) | Ketu | At its weakest here, though a neecha bhanga can cancel it. |
| Moolatrikona | Moon | Its favourite working ground, second only to exaltation. |
This is why the same graha behaves so differently between two charts. See how each graha reads in this sign on the Venus in Taurus page.
The nakshatras inside Vrishabha
A rashi is a 30 degree block, but Jyotish reads finer than that. Each sign is subdivided into nakshatras of 13 degrees 20 minutes, and your janma nakshatra decides your Vimshottari dasha. These are the nakshatras that fall inside Vrishabha:
| Nakshatra | Dasha lord | Span |
|---|---|---|
| Krittika | Sun | 26°40' Aries to 10°00' Taurus |
| Rohini | Moon | 10°00' Taurus to 23°20' Taurus |
| Mrigashira | Mars | 23°20' Taurus to 6°40' Gemini |
Two people can both be Vrishabha and still differ sharply, because a nakshatra is a much finer instrument than a rashi. It is the nakshatra, not the sign, that sets which planetary period you are running for the first years of your life.
Vrishabha personality and nature
Taurus natives are steady, loyal and pleasure-loving, building security patiently and enjoying life’s comforts. They resist being rushed and value what lasts.
As a Earth sign the underlying temperament is practical, patient and grounded, slow to move and hard to shift. The Fixed (Sthira) quality decides how it is sustained: fixed signs consolidate and endure, holding a position long after others move on.
Strengths
- Reliability
- Patience
- Loyalty
- Practicality
Challenges
- Stubbornness
- Possessiveness
- Resistance to change
These traits describe the sign, not the person. They show most clearly when Vrishabha is your lagna or your Chandra rashi, and they are heavily modified by the placement of Venus and by any graha sitting in the sign.
Career and work for Vrishabha
Finance, agriculture, the arts, food, luxury goods and real estate.
In a real chart, career is read from the 10th house and its lord rather than from the rashi alone. A Vrishabha lagna gives Kumbha on the 10th house, ruled by Saturn, which usually says more about the actual profession than the ascendant sign does. The career and 10th house guide walks through the full method.
Vrishabha compatibility
Vrishabha shares its Earth element with Virgo and Capricorn, which makes those pairings naturally easy in temperament. Directly opposite sits Vrishchika (Scorpio), the classic attraction-and-friction axis: complementary, and rarely restful.
Element matching is only a starting point. Vedic matchmaking uses Ashtakoot Guna Milan, eight kootas scored out of 36, and most of them are calculated from the nakshatra rather than the rashi. Varna, Vashya, Graha Maitri and Bhakoot come from the sign; Tara, Yoni, Gana and Nadi come from the birth star. A pairing that looks poor by element can score well once the nakshatras are in, and the reverse is just as common.
How Vrishabha shows up in your own kundali
Vrishabha appears in every chart. What changes is where. Three placements matter most:
- Vrishabha as your lagna. The sign was rising at your birth, so it sets the whole house structure and the traits above describe your outward nature and body. Your chart is then read with Venus as lagna lord.
- Vrishabha as your Chandra rashi. Your Moon sits here, so it describes your mind and emotional habit. This is the sign used for rashifal, gochar and transit predictions.
- Vrishabha on any other house. The sign colours that department of life, and the condition of Venus decides how it performs.
If you are new to this, the twelve rashis lesson covers the signs in order, and the lagna lesson explains how a sign lands on a house in the first place.
