What Brihaspati (Jupiter) signifies
Brihaspati (Jupiter) is one of the nine grahas of Jyotish. It is a benefic graha whose presiding deity is Brihaspati / Indra, and it signifies wisdom, growth and good fortune. In the body it governs liver, fat, thighs, growth.
A graha is not a planet in the astronomical sense. The word means “that which seizes”, and each one is read as a living significator rather than a rock in space. Jupiter is the karaka of wisdom & knowledge, wealth & fortune, children, which means those matters are judged from its condition anywhere in the chart, quite apart from the houses it happens to rule.
Jupiter aspects the 7th house from itself, and additionally the 5th and 9th, which is why its reach across a chart is unusually wide. Its day is Thursday, its direction North-East, its element ether, and its metal gold.

When Jupiter is strong, meaning dignified by sign, well placed by house and free of affliction, it gives wisdom, wealth, optimism, respect, healthy children and spiritual growth.
When it is weak, combust, debilitated or heavily afflicted, the same graha gives poor judgement, financial strain, over-indulgence and lack of faith.
