What Budha (Mercury) signifies
Budha (Mercury) is one of the nine grahas of Jyotish. It is a neutral graha whose presiding deity is Vishnu, and it signifies intellect, speech and commerce. In the body it governs nervous system, skin, speech.
A graha is not a planet in the astronomical sense. The word means “that which seizes”, and each one is read as a living significator rather than a rock in space. Mercury is the karaka of intellect & analysis, communication & speech, business & trade, which means those matters are judged from its condition anywhere in the chart, quite apart from the houses it happens to rule.
Mercury aspects only the 7th house from itself, so its influence is focused rather than wide. Its day is Wednesday, its direction North, its element earth, and its metal bronze.

When Mercury is strong, meaning dignified by sign, well placed by house and free of affliction, it gives sharp intelligence, eloquence, business acumen and quick learning.
When it is weak, combust, debilitated or heavily afflicted, the same graha gives poor communication, indecision, nervousness and trouble in studies or trade.
