What Shani (Saturn) signifies
Shani (Saturn) is one of the nine grahas of Jyotish. It is a malefic graha whose presiding deity is Shani / Yama, and it signifies discipline, karma and hard-earned maturity. In the body it governs bones, teeth, nerves, joints, longevity.
A graha is not a planet in the astronomical sense. The word means “that which seizes”, and each one is read as a living significator rather than a rock in space. Saturn is the karaka of discipline & karma, delay & obstacles, longevity, which means those matters are judged from its condition anywhere in the chart, quite apart from the houses it happens to rule.
Saturn aspects the 7th house from itself, and additionally the 3rd and 10th, which is why its reach across a chart is unusually wide. Its day is Saturday, its direction West, its element air, and its metal iron.

When Saturn is strong, meaning dignified by sign, well placed by house and free of affliction, it gives patience, endurance, discipline, longevity and slow but lasting success.
When it is weak, combust, debilitated or heavily afflicted, the same graha gives delays, chronic obstacles, loneliness, pessimism and hard labour with little reward.

A single factor rarely settles it, which is why two charts with Saturn in the same sign can read in opposite directions.
