How the five limbs are used

Tithi fixes fasts and festivals (Ekadashi, Purnima, Amavasya) and, with the paksha, the lunar month. Nakshatra sets the day's quality for travel, purchases and ceremonies, and the Moon's nakshatra at birth starts the Vimshottari dasha. Yoga and karana refine the choice of muhurta; a few (Vyatipata, Vaidhriti, Vishti karana) are avoided for beginnings. Vara, the weekday, brings its planetary lord and the Rahu kaal window. The Hindu Calendar shows all five for any day of the month.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a panchanga?▾

Panchanga means five limbs: tithi (the lunar day), nakshatra (the Moon's asterism), yoga (a Sun-Moon angle), karana (half a tithi) and vara (the weekday). Together they describe the quality of a day and are the basis for choosing muhurta, observing fasts and fixing festival dates.

Why does today's tithi change during the day?▾

A tithi is the time the Moon takes to gain 12 degrees on the Sun, about 23 hours 40 minutes on average, so it rarely lines up with midnight. The tithi at sunrise is the day's tithi for most purposes; the table shows when each tithi and nakshatra ends so you can see the change.

What is Rahu kaal and should I avoid it?▾

Rahu kaal is one eighth of the daytime, at a fixed position for each weekday (for example the 7th eighth on Monday). Tradition avoids starting new work, journeys and ceremonies in it. It depends on sunrise and sunset, so it differs by city and by day; the times here are computed for the city you choose.

Are the times valid for my city?▾

The server table shows Kathmandu, New Delhi and Mumbai. Use the city picker at the top to compute the panchanga for any place; sunrise, Rahu kaal and the moment a tithi ends all shift with longitude and latitude.
