Ank Jyotish is the Vedic branch of numerology, and it is not a separate system from astrology. Every digit from 1 to 9 is assigned a graha, so a number is shorthand for a planet. Number 1 is Surya, 3 is Guru, 8 is Shani. Read that way, numerology stops being a parlour trick and becomes a compressed summary of which graha runs your temperament.
It also explains why two people with the same number can be nothing alike. The digit tells you which graha is in charge. Only the birth chart tells you whether that graha is exalted or debilitated, and that is the difference between a number’s best expression and its worst.
Your two numbers
| Moolank | Bhagyank | |
|---|---|---|
| Also called | Root, radical or psychic number | Destiny or life-path number |
| Taken from | The day of the month only | The full date: day, month and year |
| Describes | Who you are on the inside, how you instinctively act | Where life keeps pushing you, the lessons that recur |
| Changes | Never, and repeats every nine days of the month | With the whole date, so siblings rarely share it |
| Read it | 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 | 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 |
When the two are friendly the life feels coherent: you want what life is pushing you toward. When they conflict there is a lasting pull between temperament and direction, which is one of the more useful things numerology actually shows.

How to work out yours in under a minute
Moolank. Take the day of the month only and add its digits until one remains. Born on the 23rd: 2 + 3 = 5, Moolank 5. Born on the 29th: 2 + 9 = 11, then 1 + 1 = 2, Moolank 2. The month and year are irrelevant, which is why everyone born on the 5th, 14th or 23rd of any month shares Moolank 5.
Bhagyank. Take the whole date and add every digit. For 14 July 1993: 1 + 4 + 0 + 7 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 3 = 34, then 3 + 4 = 7, Bhagyank 7. Because it uses the full date it shifts from year to year while the Moolank stays put.
Personal year. A third number worth knowing. Add your birth day and birth month to the current year and reduce. For someone born 14 July, in 2026: 1 + 4 + 0 + 7 + 2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 22, then 2 + 2 = 4, a personal year 4, ruled by Rahu. It changes annually and describes the tone of that particular year rather than the life.
Why numbers agree or clash
Number compatibility is not arithmetic. It is planetary friendship. Two numbers get along when their ruling grahas are natural friends, and they grate when the grahas are enemies. Number 1 (Surya) and number 8 (Shani) are the classic difficult pair, because Shani is a natural enemy of Surya. Number 3 (Guru) and number 1 (Surya) work easily, because Guru and Surya are friends. The same table drives graha relationships in a birth chart, so a number reading and a chart reading never contradict each other.
What the chart adds that a number cannot
This is the honest limit of numerology. If your number is ruled by Shukra and Shukra is exalted in your kundali, the number’s charm, artistry and comfort show clearly. If Shukra is debilitated, combust or hemmed by malefics, the same number gives indulgence and dependency instead. Nothing in the digit distinguishes those two lives.
So read your number, then check the graha behind it. Start with the nine grahas, then exaltation, debilitation and planetary strength, and see where your graha sits in its own reference page. If it is joined to another graha, the conjunction pages show how the two blend. And whether any remedial measure suits you personally is a question for a qualified astrologer who has read your chart, not for a number.
