What Surya (Sun) signifies
Surya (Sun) is one of the nine grahas of Jyotish. It is a malefic graha whose presiding deity is Agni / Shiva, and it signifies the soul, authority and vital life-force. In the body it governs heart, bones, eyes (right), vitality.
A graha is not a planet in the astronomical sense. The word means “that which seizes”, and each one is read as a living significator rather than a rock in space. Sun is the karaka of soul (atma), father, authority & government, which means those matters are judged from its condition anywhere in the chart, quite apart from the houses it happens to rule.
Sun aspects only the 7th house from itself, so its influence is focused rather than wide. Its day is Sunday, its direction East, its element fire, and its metal gold.
