What the 11th house (Labha) means
A bhava (house) is a division of the chart, not a sign. The twelve bhavas are fixed compartments of life, and the signs rotate into them according to your lagna. The 11th house, called Labha and known as the house of gains, governs gains, income, friendships and fulfilled desires.
Its natural sign is Aquarius and its natural lord is Saturn. In the body it maps to the calves and ankles. Sitting directly opposite is the 5th house (house of creativity), and the two always work as a pair: whatever is emphasised here is balanced there.
One point decides most readings and is worth stating early. In your own chart the 11th house is not ruled by Saturn. Classification: what kind of house this is
The 11th house is a Upachaya (growing) house. Bhava classes are not decoration. They decide which grahas do well here before any other factor is considered.
Upachaya (growing). The 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th improve with time and effort. Malefics actually prosper here, which is why a difficult graha in an upachaya house is a strength rather than a problem.
The 11th house lord matters more than its occupants
Beginners read the grahas sitting in a house. Experienced readers look first at the bhavesha, the lord of the house, because a house delivers through its lord. An empty 11th house with a strong, well-placed lord performs far better than a crowded one whose lord is debilitated or hidden in a dusthana.
Three questions settle it. Where is the lord placed, by house and by sign? What is its dignity, meaning is it exalted, in its own sign, in a friend’s sign or debilitated? And what aspects it? A 11th house lord placed in a kendra or trikona with benefic drishti is the single clearest sign that this area of life will work out.
The natural lord, Saturn, still matters as the karaka, the natural significator of these matters. Its condition in your chart colours the house even when it rules somewhere else entirely.
What each graha does in the 11th house

Drishti: which positions aspect the 11th house
A bhava is shaped as much by what looks at it as by what sits in it. Every graha casts drishti on the 7th house from itself, and Mangal, Guru, Shani, Rahu and Ketu have special aspects on top of that.

- Mars aspects the 11th house from the 4th, 5th and 8th house.
- Mercury aspects the 11th house from the 5th house.

- Saturn aspects the 11th house from the 2nd, 5th and 9th house.

A strong versus a weak 11th house
When the 11th house and its lord are strong and well placed, the classical result is strong income, valuable friends and the fulfilment of ambitions.
When the lord is weak, combust, debilitated or hidden in a dusthana, and the house receives malefic drishti without benefic relief, the same bhava gives blocked gains, unreliable friends and unmet desires.
Most charts sit between the two. That is normal, and it is why a competent reading measures degree rather than declaring a verdict. A house is judged on the balance of its lord’s dignity and placement, the grahas in it, the drishti on it, and the strength of its natural karaka.
How to judge the 11th house in your own kundali
Work through it in this order. It is the sequence a Jyotishi actually uses:
- Find which sign falls on your 11th house. That depends on your lagna, so it is different for everyone.
- Identify that sign’s lord. That graha is your 11th house lord, whatever the natural lord Saturn is doing.
- Find where that lord sits, and judge its dignity by sign.
- Note any grahas placed in the 11th house itself, using the table above.
- Add the drishti falling on the house.
- Check the natural karaka, Saturn, separately.
- Only then look at timing, through the Vimshottari dasha of the house lord and the grahas involved.
Results for this bhava usually surface during the dasha or antardasha of its lord, or of a graha placed in it, which is why two people with an identical 11th house experience it at completely different ages.
