The 12 Houses (Bhavas)

What each house of the birth chart governs

A Vedic birth chart is divided into twelve houses or bhavas, each governing a distinct area of life, from the self and wealth to marriage, career and liberation. The 1st house begins at your ascendant (Lagna), and the houses follow in order. Planets, signs and their lords interact within these houses to shape your life story. The houses are grouped as Kendra (angular), Trikona (trine), Dusthana (difficult) and Upachaya (growing). Choose a house below for its full meaning.

The four house groups

Kendras (1, 4, 7, 10) are the load-bearing pillars of a chart and give grahas placed in them the power to act. Trikonas (1, 5, 9) are the houses of dharma and fortune, the most auspicious in the chart. Dusthanas (6, 8, 12) carry struggle, loss and upheaval, but also resilience, research and liberation. Upachayas (3, 6, 10, 11) improve with time, which is why malefics like Shani and Mangal actually prosper there.

The lord matters more than the occupants

Beginners read the grahas sitting in a house. Experienced readers look first at the bhavesha, the lord of that house, because a house delivers through its lord. An empty house with a strong, well-placed lord outperforms a crowded one whose lord is debilitated or buried in a dusthana. And in your own chart the lord is not the natural lord in the table above: it is whichever graha rules the sign that actually falls on that house, which depends entirely on your rising sign. See the lagna lesson and planets in the houses.
