What the 6th house (Ari / Shatru) means
A bhava (house) is a division of the chart, not a sign. The twelve bhavas are fixed compartments of life, and the signs rotate into them according to your lagna. The 6th house, called Ari / Shatru and known as the house of health & service, governs health, service, competition and the obstacles you overcome.
Its natural sign is Virgo and its natural lord is Mercury. In the body it maps to the lower abdomen, intestines, kidneys. Sitting directly opposite is the 12th house (house of loss & liberation), and the two always work as a pair: whatever is emphasised here is balanced there.
One point decides most readings and is worth stating early. In your own chart the 6th house is not ruled by Mercury. Classification: what kind of house this is
The 6th house is a Dusthana (difficult), Upachaya (growing) house. Bhava classes are not decoration. They decide which grahas do well here before any other factor is considered.
Dusthana (difficult). The 6th, 8th and 12th carry struggle, loss and upheaval. They are also the houses of resilience, research and liberation, so they are not simply bad.
Upachaya (growing). The 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th improve with time and effort. Malefics actually prosper here, which is why a difficult graha in an upachaya house is a strength rather than a problem.
The 6th house lord matters more than its occupants
Beginners read the grahas sitting in a house. Experienced readers look first at the bhavesha, the lord of the house, because a house delivers through its lord. An empty 6th house with a strong, well-placed lord performs far better than a crowded one whose lord is debilitated or hidden in a dusthana.
Three questions settle it. Where is the lord placed, by house and by sign? What is its dignity, meaning is it exalted, in its own sign, in a friend’s sign or debilitated? And what aspects it? A 6th house lord placed in a kendra or trikona with benefic drishti is the single clearest sign that this area of life will work out.
The natural lord, Mercury, still matters as the karaka, the natural significator of these matters. Its condition in your chart colours the house even when it rules somewhere else entirely.
What each graha does in the 6th house

Drishti: which positions aspect the 6th house
A bhava is shaped as much by what looks at it as by what sits in it. Every graha casts drishti on the 7th house from itself, and Mangal, Guru, Shani, Rahu and Ketu have special aspects on top of that.

A strong versus a weak 6th house
When the 6th house and its lord are strong and well placed, the classical result is the power to defeat enemies, good health with effort and success in service.
When the lord is weak, combust, debilitated or hidden in a dusthana, and the house receives malefic drishti without benefic relief, the same bhava gives chronic illness, mounting debts and strong opposition from rivals.
Most charts sit between the two. That is normal, and it is why a competent reading measures degree rather than declaring a verdict. A house is judged on the balance of its lord’s dignity and placement, the grahas in it, the drishti on it, and the strength of its natural karaka.
How to judge the 6th house in your own kundali
Work through it in this order. It is the sequence a Jyotishi actually uses:
- Find which sign falls on your 6th house. That depends on your lagna, so it is different for everyone.
- Identify that sign’s lord. That graha is your 6th house lord, whatever the natural lord Mercury is doing.
- Find where that lord sits, and judge its dignity by sign.
- Note any grahas placed in the 6th house itself, using the table above.
- Add the drishti falling on the house.
- Check the natural karaka, Mercury, separately.
- Only then look at timing, through the Vimshottari dasha of the house lord and the grahas involved.
