Vedic matchmaking does not compare sun signs. It compares two Moon charts across eight categories, the kootas, weighted from one point to eight and totalling 36. Four of those eight are read from the nakshatra rather than the rashi, and they carry 21 of the 36 points, which is why a birth time matters.

What it will not do
A score is a filter, not a verdict. Two matches on 20 points can be completely different situations depending on which kootas failed, and a full reading also weighs the 7th house and its lord, Shukra, Guru and the dashas running for both people.
Questions
How many points is a good match?
Traditionally 18 or more out of 36 is acceptable, 24 and above is good, and above 32 is rare. Where the points were lost matters more than the total.
Do you need both birth times?
For the full 36 points, yes, because four kootas come from the nakshatra. Without them only the rashi-level kootas can be scored.
Does Nadi dosha mean we cannot marry?
No. It is the largest single deduction, but classical texts describe several cancellations, and it is read alongside the rest of both charts.
Is Mangal dosha part of the 36 points?
No. It is a separate natal condition based on where Mangal sits, and it has its own cancellations.
