The eight kootas, and what each one measures
| Koota | Max | Measures |
|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | spiritual temperament and the ease of one partner supporting the other's work |
| Vashya | 2 | mutual attraction and influence between the two |
| Tara | 3 | the nakshatra count between the two Moons: health, fortune and longevity of the bond |
| Yoni | 4 | physical and instinctive compatibility, from the animal symbol of each nakshatra |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | friendship between the lords of the two Moon signs: mental compatibility |
| Gana | 6 | the temperament class of each nakshatra: deva, manushya or rakshasa |
| Bhakoot | 7 | the distance between the two Moon signs: prosperity and family harmony |
| Nadi | 8 | the pulse class of each nakshatra: health of the couple and of children |
The weights are not arbitrary: Nadi (8) and Bhakoot (7) carry the most because the classical texts tie them to children and to the family's prosperity, and a zero in either is treated as a dosha in its own right even when the total is high. Varna (1) and Vashya (2) matter least.
How to read the score
Read the total first, then the zeros. A 26 with full Nadi and Bhakoot is a stronger match than a 30 with Nadi at zero. Then check Mangal Dosha in both charts, then the 7th house and its lord in each chart, then Venus (for him) and Jupiter (for her). That is the order a working Jyotish follows, and the order the full Kundali Milan report on this site follows. Guna Milan is a screen, not a verdict: it tells you where to look.
Compatibility by Moon sign
The Bhakoot and Graha Maitri kootas depend only on the two rashis, so every pair of Moon signs has a fixed baseline. Read yours:
