Rahu and Ketu are the two lunar nodes, the points where the paths of Surya (Sun) and Chandra (Moon) cross. They have no physical body, which is why Jyotish calls them chhaya grahas, the shadow planets. They are also the reason eclipses happen at all.
They move backwards through the zodiac, always exactly opposite each other, spending roughly eighteen months in each pair of signs. Rahu drives desire, ambition and obsession. Ketu brings detachment, insight and letting go. Between them they mark the karmic axis of a chart: what you are pulled toward in this life, and what you have already finished with.
Where the nodes are in 2026
| Period | Rahu | Ketu |
|---|---|---|
| 1 January to 6 December | Kumbha (Aquarius) | Simha (Leo) |
| 6 December onward | Makara (Capricorn) | Karka (Cancer) |
For almost the entire year the axis runs Kumbha to Simha. Rahu in Kumbha, a sign of networks, technology, groups and unconventional thinking, is a comfortable placement for it. Ketu opposite in Simha loosens the grip of ego, authority and personal recognition.
In the first week of December the axis shifts back into Makara and Karka, which begins an eighteen-month chapter that mostly belongs to 2027.
The nodal axis in 2026 for all 12 rashis
Because the nodes always sit opposite, they work as a pair. Rahu inflates the house it occupies. Ketu empties the house opposite. Count from your Chandra rashi and read both columns together, because one is meaningless without the other.
| Your Chandra rashi | Rahu's house | What Rahu pushes | Ketu's house | What Ketu releases |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mesha (Aries) | 11th | Gains, networks and fulfilled desire, Rahu's most rewarding house | 5th | Detachment from children, study or creative output |
| Vrishabha (Taurus) | 10th | Career ambition at full volume, visibility and shortcuts both | 4th | Emotional distance from home and mother |
| Mithuna (Gemini) | 9th | Belief questioned, unconventional teachers, foreign dharma | 3rd | Courage withdrawn, effort feels unrewarding |
| Karka (Cancer) | 8th | Research, secrets and sudden change, occult interest rises | 2nd | A loosened grip on money and family speech |
| Simha (Leo) | 7th | Partnership charged with desire and unusual attraction | 1st | Detachment from your own identity, an inward year |
| Kanya (Virgo) | 6th | Rivals, debts and disease defeated, Rahu's strongest house | 12th | A strong spiritual pull, the moksha house lit up |
| Tula (Libra) | 5th | Children, study and speculation, a strong pull toward risk | 11th | Fewer but truer gains and friendships |
| Vrishchika (Scorpio) | 4th | Home and peace of mind unsettled, restlessness indoors | 10th | Career ambition cools, work becomes duty not desire |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | 3rd | Ambition through effort and communication, one of Rahu's best houses | 9th | Faith turns personal rather than inherited |
| Makara (Capricorn) | 2nd | Money, food and speech, a hunger to accumulate | 8th | Deep research, sudden endings, spiritual opening |
| Kumbha (Aquarius) | 1st | Your own image and identity, magnified and sometimes distorted | 7th | Distance in partnership, needs conscious effort |
| Meena (Pisces) | 12th | Foreign lands, isolation, expense and inner unrest | 6th | Enemies dissolve on their own, health quietly improves |
Why the pairing is the whole point
A common mistake is reading Rahu's house and ignoring Ketu's. The axis is a single mechanism. Whatever Rahu inflates is being funded by whatever Ketu is draining.
If Rahu is in your 10th, career grows loud and visible, and it is Ketu in the 4th that pays for it with distance from home. If Rahu is in the 11th filling your life with gains and contacts, Ketu in the 5th is quietly reducing your appetite for the creative or personal things that used to matter. Neither is a punishment. It is a trade, and the year goes better when you make the trade deliberately instead of noticing it in December.
The classical gochar rule for Rahu is short: it gives good results from the 3rd, 6th and 11th houses from Chandra, the same Upachaya houses that suit Shani (Saturn). In 2026 that favours Dhanu, Kanya and Mesha Chandras.
Why the nodes behave so unlike other grahas
Rahu and Ketu own no sign and have no natural friends in the ordinary sense. They take on the character of whichever graha rules the sign they sit in and whichever graha they conjoin. That is why the same Rahu transit reads so differently between two charts.
In 2026 Rahu occupies Kumbha, ruled by Shani, so this year's Rahu carries a Shani flavour: systems, structures, groups, patience and long games rather than quick chaos. Ketu in Simha borrows from Surya, which is why the letting-go this year is so often about pride, status and being seen.
Both nodes are permanently retrograde, and both cast drishti on the 5th, 7th and 9th houses from themselves, exactly like Guru (Jupiter). The drishti lesson explains why that reach matters more than the placement alone.
A few natal combinations change everything about how a nodal transit lands, and they are worth checking in your own chart:
- Guru and Rahu together is Guru Chandal Yoga, brilliance loosened from ethics.
- Surya and Ketu together presses on identity, the father and self-worth.
- Chandra and Rahu together is Grahan Yoga, which makes the mind restless and vivid.
- Kaal Sarp Yoga, all seven grahas hemmed between Rahu and Ketu, makes every nodal transit louder than usual.
Living the axis well
The nodes are not good or bad. They are unfinished business. Rahu shows the appetite you were born with and cannot argue your way out of. Ketu shows the skill you already have, which is precisely why it stops interesting you.
The practical version is simple. Pursue what Rahu wants, but on Ketu's terms: without needing the credit. Do not abandon Ketu's house entirely, because that is where your competence actually lives. And be suspicious of Rahu's promises when they arrive too easily, because Rahu's characteristic move is to give you exactly what you asked for and let you discover what it cost.
Eclipse periods intensify all of this. The 2026 eclipse guide covers the four eclipses of the year and which rashis they fall on.
Find your own nodal axis
Your Chandra rashi gives you the shape of the year. Your birth chart gives you the detail: which houses the nodes actually occupy for your lagna, whether either node sits with another graha, and whether you are running a Rahu or Ketu dasha, which lasts eighteen and seven years respectively and matters far more than any transit.
