Rahu enters Makara (Capricorn) on December 5, 2026, at about 10:32 pm IST, and stays there until June 24, 2028. Ketu moves into Karka (Cancer) at the same moment, because the two nodes always sit exactly opposite each other. That is roughly eighteen and a half months on the Makara and Karka axis.
The nodes travel backwards through the zodiac, so Rahu arrives in Makara from Kumbha (Aquarius), not from Dhanu (Sagittarius). This guide covers the exact dates, the eclipses that fall inside the transit, and a short reading for each of the twelve moon signs.
What Rahu in Makara means
Rahu is not a physical body. It is one of the two points where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's path, which is why eclipses only ever happen near Rahu and Ketu. Our guide to Rahu, Ketu and eclipses covers the astronomy in plain terms, and the reference page on Rahu covers what it signifies in a chart.
In Jyotish, Rahu stands for ambition, obsession, foreign things, technology, shortcuts, and appetite for more. It enlarges whatever it touches without supplying a sense of proportion.
Makara is ruled by Shani (Saturn), and it is the sign of structure, work, hierarchy, patience, and public standing. Rahu and Shani are treated as friendly in most classical texts, so Rahu usually behaves better here than in signs ruled by planets it sits badly with. Ambition dropped into a disciplined frame tends to produce something solid. That does not make the transit comfortable. It means the pressure is more likely to build something than to scatter you.
Ketu opposite in Karka touches home, mother, emotional security, and the sense of belonging. Where Rahu pulls you outward towards work and status, Ketu quietly loosens your grip on comfort and roots. Many people feel this as a pull between what they are chasing and where they came from.
The dates that matter
| Event | Date |
|---|---|
| Rahu enters Makara, Ketu enters Karka | December 5, 2026 |
| Rahu moves into Shravana | April 11, 2027 |
| Rahu moves into Uttara Ashadha | December 19, 2027 |
| Rahu leaves Makara for Dhanu | June 24, 2028 |
All times are calculated with the Lahiri ayanamsa and the mean node, which is the same setting this site uses for every chart it draws.
Rahu's path through the nakshatras
A sign is a wide space, and Rahu does not feel the same throughout it. Because the nodes move backwards, Rahu crosses the three nakshatras of Makara in reverse order.
It begins in the second half of Dhanishtha, a nakshatra tied to wealth, rhythm, music, and group standing. Expect the first four months to raise questions about money and reputation.
From April 11, 2027 it moves through Shravana, the nakshatra of listening, learning, and reputation carried by word of mouth. This is the longest stretch, about eight months, and it tends to be the most useful part of the transit for study and for anything built on trust.
From December 19, 2027 it finishes in Uttara Ashadha, tied to lasting victory and work that outlives the worker. Results that were slow to arrive often land in this window.
The eclipses on this axis
Eclipses only happen close to the nodes, so while Rahu sits in Makara and Ketu in Karka, every eclipse falls on or near that axis. There are seven inside the transit.
| Date | Type | Sidereal position |
|---|---|---|
| February 6, 2027 | Annular solar | Makara, Dhanishtha |
| February 21, 2027 | Penumbral lunar | Simha, Magha |
| July 18, 2027 | Penumbral lunar | Makara, Uttara Ashadha |
| August 2, 2027 | Total solar | Karka, Pushya |
| August 17, 2027 | Penumbral lunar | Makara, Dhanishtha |
| January 12, 2028 | Partial lunar | Mithuna, Punarvasu |
| January 26, 2028 | Annular solar | Makara, Shravana |
The one to mark is August 2, 2027. It is a total solar eclipse in Karka, in Pushya, sitting on Ketu. It is one of the longest totalities of the century, and it falls squarely on the nodal axis this transit is built around. Whichever house Karka occupies in your chart is the area it speaks to.
Visibility depends on where you are, and a solar eclipse is only visible from part of the world. Classical texts advise keeping major ceremonies away from eclipse windows, which is worth knowing if you are fixing a date for a wedding or a housewarming in 2027. For the chart patterns that form around the nodes, see Kala Sarpa Yoga and Chandal Yoga.
When this last happened
The nodes take a little over eighteen years to travel the whole zodiac, so Rahu returns to Makara roughly once every nineteen years. The three most recent visits were April 2008 to November 2009, September 1989 to April 1991, and February 1971 to September 1972.
That cycle is more useful personally than historically. Rather than reading world events into it, look at what was happening in your own life during 2008 and 2009. People often find the same theme returning in a more mature form, because they are now roughly nineteen years further along. Someone who started their first job then may be dealing with authority and standing now. Someone who moved away from home then may be deciding where home actually is.
If you were born while Rahu was in Makara, this transit is your Rahu return in that sign, and it tends to be a more pointed period than it is for everyone else.

|---|---|---|
| Mesha | 10th | 4th |
| Vrishabha | 9th | 3rd |
| Mithuna | 8th | 2nd |

| Meena | 11th | 5th |
Rahu is generally held to do better in the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th houses, which are the houses of effort and growth. Mesha, Simha, Vrishchika and Meena moon signs get Rahu in one of those.
What it means for each Rashi
Mesha
Rahu sits in your 10th house of career and public standing, which is one of its stronger placements. Ambition rises and opportunities appear, often in unfamiliar fields or with people from elsewhere. Ketu in the 4th can make home feel less settled while work takes over. Guard against reaching for a role you cannot yet hold. More on Mesha and the 10th house.
Vrishabha
Rahu moves through your 9th house of luck, higher study, father, and belief. Long distance travel, foreign study, and unusual teachers all become live options. Older certainties can loosen. Check credentials before committing to a course or a guide. More on Vrishabha.
Mithuna
Rahu transits your 8th house of joint money, sudden change, and hidden matters. Handle loans, insurance, inheritance and paperwork carefully, and read documents twice. Useful for research and for anything that rewards digging below the surface. More on Mithuna.
Karka
Rahu sits in your 7th house of marriage, partnership and business ties, with Ketu right over your moon sign. Relationships can feel intense or unclear, and you may feel less like yourself than usual. Give big commitments more time than they seem to need. More on Karka.
Simha
Rahu transits your 6th house of work, competition, debts and health, which suits it well. You can outwork rivals and clear old debts. Watch stress levels, since a strong 6th house Rahu often shows up in the body first. More on Simha.
Kanya
Rahu moves through your 5th house of children, learning, romance and speculation. Creative output can rise sharply. This placement also raises appetite for risk, so keep speculation and trading within limits you can afford. More on Kanya.
Tula
Rahu sits in your 4th house of home, mother, land and peace of mind, while Ketu occupies your 10th. Property matters and moves are common. Career direction can feel uncertain even as home life demands attention. More on Tula.
Vrishchika
Rahu transits your 3rd house of courage, effort, siblings and communication, another of its better houses. Self promotion, writing, and short travel all work in your favour. A good stretch to push a personal project. More on Vrishchika.
Dhanu
Rahu moves through your 2nd house of savings, family and speech. Income can rise, and so can spending. Be careful with what you say and what you sign, since the 2nd house governs both. More on Dhanu.
Makara
Rahu is in your 1st house, directly over your moon sign, with Ketu in the 7th. Appearance, image and identity all come up for revision. People may read you differently from how you intend. Health and sleep deserve attention. More on Makara.
Kumbha
Rahu transits your 12th house of expenses, foreign places, isolation and rest. Foreign links and travel are common, and so are costs that were not planned for. Quiet work suits this period better than public pushing. More on Kumbha.
Meena
Rahu moves through your 11th house of gains, networks and elder siblings, which is traditionally its most comfortable house. Income, contacts and long held wishes all get support. Choose your circle carefully, since this house works through other people. More on Meena.
How to read this sensibly
A transit is not a forecast on its own. It sits on top of your birth chart and your current planetary period, which is why the same Rahu gives one person a promotion and another person a headache. If Rahu rules or occupies a strong house in your chart, this transit lands very differently than if it does not. Our lesson on drishti and planetary aspects explains how Rahu's aspects reach other parts of the chart, and the nine grahas covers what each planet governs.
Two practical points. First, Rahu enlarges but does not stabilise, so anything you begin now benefits from a plan you can hold to for eighteen months. Second, the Makara and Karka axis is the axis of work against home, so most of the friction people feel during this transit shows up somewhere along that line.

Common questions
Is Rahu in Makara good or bad?
Neither on its own. Rahu is not classically exalted or debilitated in Makara, but Shani rules the sign and the two are treated as friendly, so Rahu is reasonably comfortable here. What decides the result is your own chart and the planetary period you are running.
Does this affect everyone on the same date?
The transit begins for everyone on December 5, 2026, but the house it activates depends on your moon sign, which is why the same transit produces very different results. The table above shows which house it falls in for each Rashi.
Should I avoid making decisions during the eclipses?
Classical texts advise keeping ceremonies such as weddings and housewarmings outside eclipse windows. Ordinary work and ordinary decisions are not covered by that advice. The eclipse dates are listed above so you can plan around them.
Should I use my sun sign or my moon sign?
Your moon sign, called the Chandra Rashi. Vedic transit reading is done from the Moon, not from the Sun. If you are not sure which yours is, generate your chart and check.
How long does the transit last?
About eighteen and a half months, from December 5, 2026 to June 24, 2028. Rahu then moves into Dhanu and Ketu into Mithuna.
